Using Beethoven’s “Leichte Sonate” as an example this paper discusses the techniques involved in trainning biginning students of piano to perform a musical piece by harmonizing the imaginative understanding necessary to interpret a composer’s intent with physical discipline. Specifically the paper discusses how students develop a feel for the music they are playing by following the score as they perform simultaneously with the ear and the mind. Considered also is how one trains students to balance their own interpretations of a musical piece with the composer’s message
